My children are at that age where they are hanging their drawings all over the house!
I find a picture attached to the bedroom door.
There’s one hanging off of the kitchen cabinet.
As I glance over right now, there is even one hanging on my… jacket?!
Huh?!
Anyways…
When your child reaches a certain age, they will start creating their own artwork.
And then they will want to display it all on their own wherever they see fit!
Besides a hodgepodge of scattered pictures everywhere, it really isn’t a problem.
Or is it?
Check out these pointers below so that you will be ready when your child starts hanging their drawings and displaying their artwork all over your home!

Dedicate a Wall
Dedicate one wall in your home where your child can display his or her drawings.
Dedicate one shelf where they can place their artwork otherwise.
By giving your child a dedicated space, they may be more likely to stick to putting their artwork in that spot.
Some parents may not mind their child’s work hanging all over the house.
Other parents may want their home to appear more pristine.
Whichever kind of parent you are, it is important to, at least, give your child a space to express their creativity!
Pick out a spot in your home for your child to place their artwork.
Let your child know how precious those pictures are and that you’ve made this special spot just for them.
Allow your child to fill the area with as much or as little as desired.
Provide Painter’s Tape
Give your child only – and I mean, only – painter’s tape to hang his drawings on the wall!
Why?
Because painter’s tape, unlike other tape, will peel off the wall easily.
It will also prevent peeling any paint off of the wall when you go to take the pictures down.
I learned the hard way that giving my children any other tape meant a beating to my freshly painted walls!
Now I leave a roll of painter’s tape within their reach so that they can use that instead of the gift-wrapping tape!
My walls have been safe ever since!
Date Your Child’s Artwork
This is so important.
If you can, write the date that your child made that beautiful piece of art.
If you have more than one child, make certain to place your child’s name on it, as well.
You may be like me and want to save just about every piece!
30 years from now, your child will appreciate seeing his name and the date that it was made.
Trust me, so will you.
It will get you to say, “Oh, look at this. You made this in 2024. You were only 5 years old!”
The last thing that you want, years from now, is a container of artwork that leaves you wondering who made what and when.
So, take that extra 10 seconds and jot down your child’s name and date on the back.
You’ll be so happy that you did!
Remove Old Artwork
When your child’s art space gets full, start removing pieces to make more room.
Easy enough.
But what do you do with it then?
Many parents that I know just toss their child’s work after awhile.
If you decide to do that, take a snapshot of it first.
It won’t hurt.
This way, you will always be able to look back on it.
Perhaps you can make a scrapbook of photos of your child’s artwork.
If you are more like me and save every little piece because you can’t let go, store it.
I fill a storage container with my children’s artwork and drawings.
Then I label the container and store it in the basement.
Yes, it takes up space.
But it’s a record of my children’s childhood.
And it means so much to me.
Storing it and holding on to those little paintings, happy faces and rainbows just feels right.
You always have to do what feels right to you.
So, keep it or toss it, but make room for your child to keep working and displaying!
Admire Your Child’s Work
Don’t roll your eyes as your child hangs yet another drawing up on the wall!
I know it can become a little excessive, but your child is in a great point in their little life!
Don’t you remember how much fun it was to create something and then display it for the world to see?
Let your child explore, have fun and create as far as his or her little mind can go!
And then make certain that you tell your child how wonderful those works are!
I am pretty certain that when you give your child that compliment, a huge smile will run across their face!
If it is piece that has meaning to you (say, a picture of you and your child together) then ask your child if you can keep it in an extra special place.
My children hang special pieces on the wall above my bed.
I like being able to climb into bed at night and see that card hanging above me that says, “I love you mommy.”
When you let your child know how special their artwork is, you give them a greater sense of confidence and self-esteem.
And a hug to go along with that compliment may make the moment that much more special!
Let Your Child Shine!
Now that you are ready for when your child starts displaying their artwork all over the house, you can relax and let your child go wild with art!
Remember to first dedicate a wall and/or a special shelf for their artwork and drawings.
Don’t forget to give them painter’s tape to hang pictures up with!
Place your child’s name and date on the back of each piece so that you can always remember when it was made and, if you have more than one child, by who.
When the wall or shelf gets full, make room by removing and storing or tossing old pieces.
Lastly, and most importantly, let your child know how much you love their work!
